Abstract - Treatment of Acute Multiple Sclerosis Relapses

While generally accepted practice dictates treatment with a platform immunotherapy as soon as a diagnosis (and sometimes presumptive diagnosis) is made, there are advocates for a philosophy of “wait and see if/how the disease declares itself.” This is confusing for the practitioner not specialized in treating MS. The rationale for early treatment will be presented along with the views of those who reserve therapy. The most recent abstracts from ECTRIMS 2005 on the benefits of early institution of therapy will be discussed and will include discussions of whether individual studies speak to the benefit of one IFN or translate to all formulations.
